Dz Mafia trial verdict expected in Marseille after high-security proceedings
The verdict in the high-profile trial linked to the alleged leadership of the DZ Mafia is expected to be delivered on Tuesday in Marseille, following several days of delays in proceedings marked by strict security measures and repeated procedural disputes.
The case involves a double homicide dating back to 2019, before the formal emergence of the criminal network identified by investigators as the DZ Mafia. Five defendants remain on trial, while a sixth suspect is still at large.
Before the court withdraws to deliberate, the accused are scheduled to make final statements in a hearing that has drawn significant attention due to its links to organized crime and drug trafficking networks in southern France.
Prosecutors have requested severe penalties, including life imprisonment for one of the alleged organizers, who is currently in hiding. Other defendants also face long prison sentences, reflecting the gravity of the charges, which include conspiracy and involvement in targeted killings related to territorial disputes.
Defense lawyers, however, have strongly challenged the prosecution’s case, arguing that the evidence is insufficient and, in some instances, speculative. They have criticized what they describe as selective interpretation of investigative materials, including encrypted communications and witness testimonies.
Much of the prosecution’s case relies on digital evidence and statements from former criminal associates who cooperated with investigators. While authorities argue that these elements helped uncover the structure of the alleged organization, defense teams question their reliability and context.
Legal representatives for the accused have insisted that the trial should not be treated as a symbolic case against organized crime, but rather assessed strictly on evidence. They argue that assumptions about criminal hierarchy should not replace solid proof.
The verdict, expected later in the day, is likely to have significant implications for ongoing efforts by French authorities to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating in the Marseille region.
