Spain Allocates €25 Million to Support Unaccompanied Migrant Children in Ceuta

The Spanish government has approved an emergency funding package of €25 million to strengthen support services for unaccompanied migrant children who recently arrived in Ceuta following a surge in irregular migration. The financial assistance is intended to help local authorities manage the growing demand for accommodation, healthcare, education, and child protection services.

The new allocation comes in addition to earlier government funding provided to Spanish regions hosting migrant minors, reflecting Madrid's efforts to reinforce the national reception system during a period of increased migratory pressure. Officials say the additional resources will improve the capacity of local institutions to provide safe shelter and essential care while ensuring that children's rights remain protected.

According to local authorities, hundreds of unaccompanied minors are currently under the care of social services in Ceuta, with registration and identity verification continuing as new arrivals are processed. Temporary facilities have been prepared to accommodate children as existing reception centers face capacity challenges.

Spanish authorities are also coordinating with child welfare agencies to assess each case individually. The process includes verifying identities, evaluating family circumstances, and determining the most appropriate long-term solution, which may involve family reunification when it is considered to be in the child's best interests or relocation to other Spanish regions through national solidarity mechanisms.
