SpaceX rocket crashes into the Moon creating a new crater
A SpaceX rocket component has crashed into the Moon after losing control, creating a new crater and releasing a cloud of lunar dust. The incident has renewed discussions about the growing issue of space debris and the management of abandoned spacecraft parts.
According to available data, the object weighed around 4,000 kilograms and hit the lunar surface with an impact force estimated to be equivalent to about three tons of TNT. The collision occurred at approximately 7:35 a.m. UK time, but amateur astronomers observing the Moon from Earth were unable to detect a visible flash from the impact.
Scientists and observatories are continuing to monitor the event, while lunar spacecraft are expected to provide images of the impact site in the coming days. These observations could help researchers better understand the effects of artificial objects striking the lunar surface.
The object was identified as the upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket launched by SpaceX in January 2025 to carry a lunar lander mission. Normally, rocket stages are designed to return to Earth’s atmosphere and burn up or fall into the ocean. However, the mission required additional energy, leaving the upper stage drifting in space.
SpaceX did not intend for the rocket stage to hit the Moon. Astronomers discovered earlier that the object was heading toward the lunar surface, but its remaining fuel had been exhausted, preventing any course correction. According to SpaceX officials, a combination of solar activity and gravitational forces contributed to placing the rocket on its final trajectory.
Although such impacts are uncommon, they are not unprecedented. A Chinese rocket stage struck the Moon in 2022, while NASA has previously carried out controlled lunar impacts to study the effects of collisions and analyze materials released from the lunar surface.
The incident highlights the challenges facing space agencies and private companies as space activity continues to expand, raising questions about how to manage abandoned equipment and reduce risks in future lunar missions.
