Mexican TikTok creator killed during livestream in targeted shooting

A Mexican social media creator was fatally shot while broadcasting a live video on TikTok, in an attack that has renewed concerns about violence against public figures and online personalities in the country.

The victim, César Gastelum, who had amassed more than 500,000 followers on TikTok, was attacked outside a restaurant in the northwestern state of Sinaloa while participating in a livestream with two friends.

Attack interrupted livestream

According to authorities and local reports, Gastelum and his companions were dressed as food delivery workers as part of a social media challenge when two people on a motorcycle approached them.

Police say the passenger fired at Gastelum before the attackers fled the scene. The livestream ended immediately after the shooting, and the video was subsequently removed from TikTok.

Some news organizations later reported that portions of the footage had been preserved and circulated as part of their coverage of the incident.

Investigation underway

Authorities have opened an investigation into the killing, although no information has been released regarding a possible motive or the identities of the suspects.

The attack occurred in Sinaloa, a region that has long experienced high levels of organized crime-related violence. Investigators are examining all possible lines of inquiry while seeking those responsible.

Growing concerns over violence and online visibility

The killing has once again drawn attention to the risks faced by public figures, journalists and digital content creators operating in environments affected by criminal violence.

As social media personalities gain larger audiences and greater public visibility, security experts note that they can become exposed to a range of threats similar to those faced by other high-profile individuals.
