Russian name Ivan gains popularity and surpasses Donald among US newborns
The Russian-origin name Ivan has seen a notable rise in popularity among newborn boys in the United States, entering the list of the country’s most commonly used names, according to data from the US Social Security Administration.
Recent statistics show that thousands of American families have chosen the name Ivan for their sons in recent years. In 2025, around 2,240 newborn boys were given the name, placing Ivan among the top 200 most popular male names in the country and ranking between approximately 153rd and 168th in recent years.
The growing popularity of Ivan has allowed it to surpass several traditional American names. In comparison, the name Donald was given to only about 395 newborns in 2025, while John was chosen for around 230 babies during the same period.
Experts note that naming trends in the United States are often influenced by cultural diversity, international connections, and changing preferences among younger generations. Names with European, Latin, and other global origins have increasingly gained acceptance among American parents.
Despite Ivan’s rise, the most popular name for boys in the United States in 2025 remained Liam, while Olivia continued to lead the rankings for newborn girls.
The shift in baby-name preferences reflects broader changes in American society, where traditional names coexist with a growing interest in names from different cultural backgrounds.
