France eases tree-felling rules after devastating Gironde and Landes wildfires
The French government has simplified administrative procedures for removing fire-damaged trees following the catastrophic wildfires that swept through the Gironde and Landes regions, a move aimed at accelerating forest recovery and reducing environmental risks.
A decree published in the Official Journal officially classifies the recent fires as a "major disaster," allowing forest owners to bypass certain administrative requirements that would normally apply before cutting damaged trees.
Emergency status speeds up forest recovery
Under France's forestry regulations, landowners are generally required to notify authorities and observe waiting periods before removing trees affected by fire or disease.
The new emergency designation temporarily removes those obligations for forests impacted by the large-scale fires that began on 22 July in Saumos, Gironde, and the following day in Biscarrosse, Landes.
The wildfires burned approximately 42,000 hectares of forest within days and destroyed more than 200 homes, making them among the country's most destructive fire events in decades.
Authorities warn of growing environmental risks
Officials say rapid removal of burned and weakened trees is essential to protect surviving forests.
Trees severely damaged by fire can become breeding grounds for insects and forest pests, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks that could threaten nearby healthy woodland.
Regional authorities in Nouvelle-Aquitaine have stressed that sanitary logging operations should begin as soon as affected areas are declared safe for forestry work.
Recovery begins after historic wildfire
The Gironde wildfire, described by French authorities as the country's most destructive forest fire in more than half a century, was officially declared under control after firefighters spent ten days battling the blaze.
Attention is now shifting from emergency response to long-term recovery, including restoring damaged forests, reducing future fire risks and supporting affected communities.
The government's decision is intended to speed up post-fire management while helping forest owners address the ecological and economic consequences of one of France's worst wildfire disasters in recent history.
