Burgundy Canal faces possible closure as drought severely reduces water levels

The Burgundy Canal could soon be completely closed to navigation as France faces an unprecedented drought situation that has severely reduced water levels across its waterways.

The warning was issued by Voies Navigables de France (VNF), which manages the country's inland waterways, as prolonged heat and a lack of rainfall continue to affect river and canal conditions.

Navigation already restricted in several areas

Lionel Vuittenez, regional director of VNF Centre Bourgogne, said that parts of the canal network have already been closed and that restrictions are spreading section by section.

Speaking on French media, he warned that the Burgundy Canal could be fully closed in the coming weeks if water levels continue to decline.

The situation is particularly concerning during the summer period, when canal tourism and recreational boating traditionally reach their highest levels.

Exceptional drought conditions

According to Vuittenez, the current situation represents an extreme episode in both intensity and duration.

Water shortages have affected French waterways since late May, with navigation gradually restricted as sections became impossible to operate. Since late July, only around a quarter of the canal has remained accessible.

Low water levels also create challenges for commercial vessels, which may be forced to reduce their cargo capacity in order to continue operating safely.

Broader impact on French waterways

The potential closure of the Burgundy Canal reflects wider difficulties affecting rivers and canals throughout France and Europe, where prolonged dry periods are disrupting transport, tourism and local economies.

Authorities are continuing to monitor water levels and adapt navigation rules according to changing conditions.

With rainfall remaining insufficient, the coming weeks will be decisive in determining whether the canal can maintain limited activity or whether a full shutdown becomes unavoidable.
