The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has issued a harrowing report detailing the severe impact of the ongoing conflict in Gaza on children's education. For over eight months, more than 625,000 children have been unable to attend school due to relentless hostilities, marking a significant disruption in the region's educational system.

Of these children, approximately 300,000 were previously enrolled in UNRWA schools, highlighting the extensive reach of the conflict's disruption. UNRWA underscores the importance of recreational and educational programs in helping children reintegrate into the educational system and reclaim their right to learn.

These programs are not merely academic; they are vital in alleviating the long-term psychological and developmental effects on Gaza’s youth, who are experiencing severe trauma due to the ongoing violence.

The June report from UNRWA paints a bleak picture of life in Gaza, describing it as a “never-ending nightmare.” The combination of persistent bombings, forced displacement, and critical shortages of food, water, and educational opportunities has created an environment of continuous emergency. This dire situation is inflicting profound psychological damage on an entire generation.

Tlaleng Mofokeng, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to health, expressed deep concern about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. During the 56th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Mofokeng described the conditions as genocidal.

“Many people have been literally wiped out in the Gaza Strip,” Mofokeng stated, calling for international recognition of the crisis as a genocide. She emphasized the necessity of documenting the atrocities and holding those responsible accountable. Mofokeng also highlighted the immense challenges in rebuilding Gaza's health infrastructure, which has been severely damaged by the ongoing conflict.

Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have been engaged in continuous military operations in Gaza. This has resulted in over 37,765 deaths and 86,429 injuries, with the majority being children and women. Additionally, more than 10,000 individuals are reported missing amidst widespread destruction and famine, which has claimed the lives of dozens of children.

The UNRWA report and Mofokeng’s statements call for urgent international action to address the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, emphasizing the critical need for accountability and support for the affected population.
