Floods hit Ksar El Kebir: army and rescue teams evacuate residents
Rescue operations are ongoing in Ksar El Kebir as authorities respond to severe flooding caused by heavy rains and rising levels of the Loukkos River.
The Royal Armed Forces (FAR), in coordination with local authorities and civil protection units, are conducting continuous interventions to evacuate families trapped in low-lying neighborhoods near the riverbanks. Rescue boats have been used in areas such as Avenue de la Libération (Larache Road) to ensure residents’ safety.
Civil protection units, including divers and emergency personnel, are assisting affected residents and transporting them to safer locations. Local volunteers, along with truck and tractor owners, have joined the efforts, demonstrating strong community solidarity.
Residents praised the speed and efficiency of the operations, noting that these efforts have helped limit damage from exceptionally heavy rainfall — the worst the city has seen in over thirty years.
Schools closed
In response, the Provincial Directorate of National Education, Preschool, and Sports of Larache announced the suspension of classes in all Ksar El Kebir schools from Monday, February 2, to Saturday, February 7, 2026.
This measure, coordinated with provincial authorities and the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima Regional Education Academy, aims to ensure the safety of students, teaching staff, and administrative personnel.
Provincial director Mohamed El Baali stated that the closure affects 69 public and private institutions, including 27 preschool units, impacting approximately 35,000 students. Remote learning programs, along with support and catch-up sessions, have been organized to maintain educational continuity.
