BHP executive emerges as contender to lead Woodside Energy
Leadership changes in the global energy sector are drawing attention as a senior executive from BHP Group is reportedly being considered for the top position at Woodside Energy.
According to industry reports, Geraldine Slattery, president of BHP’s operations in Australia, is among several candidates under consideration to become the next chief executive of Woodside Energy. The company is currently searching for a permanent leader following the unexpected departure of its former chief executive, Meg O’Neill.
O’Neill left Woodside late last year to take a senior leadership role at BP, one of the world’s largest energy companies. Her new position is expected to begin officially in April, prompting Woodside to accelerate its search for a successor.
Woodside has indicated that its board intends to announce a permanent CEO appointment during the first quarter of 2026. However, company representatives have declined to comment on speculation regarding individual candidates.
Industry analysts say the selection process may include both internal and external candidates. Among those reportedly under consideration are the company’s acting chief executive, Liz Westcott, as well as other senior executives within the organization.
Geraldine Slattery is widely recognized in the energy sector for her experience in managing large-scale resources projects. Before becoming president of BHP’s Australian operations, she led the company’s petroleum division, which was later acquired by Woodside in a major industry deal that reshaped the company’s portfolio.
The leadership transition comes at a time when energy companies around the world are facing growing pressure to balance traditional resource development with environmental and sustainability goals. Analysts note that the next CEO of Woodside will play a key role in shaping the company’s strategy in a rapidly evolving global energy market.
