Austrian protesters shut down key Alpine motorway linking Germany and Italy
Thousands of residents in western Austria blocked a major European transport route on Saturday, the Brenner Motorway, in protest against increasing traffic congestion caused by heavy truck and tourist flows.
The motorway, which crosses the Alps and links Germany with Italy, is considered one of the most important north-south corridors in Europe. Its closure near Matrei am Brenner disrupted a vital route used daily for freight transport and international travel.
Local residents argue that the region has been under growing pressure for years due to constant traffic jams, noise, and environmental impacts. The demonstration was organized to demand long-term solutions to manage the heavy transport flow through the narrow Wipp Valley.
The protest was led by Karl Muehlsteiger, mayor of Gries am Brenner, one of the towns located along the heavily used corridor. He and other community representatives highlighted the need for better transport planning and stronger measures to protect local living conditions.
Authorities have repeatedly faced criticism from residents who say that infrastructure has not kept pace with the rising volume of vehicles crossing the Alpine region, particularly freight trucks traveling between northern and southern Europe.
