Russia and North Korea open new bridge to boost cross-border trade
Russia and North Korea have inaugurated a new road bridge spanning the Tumannaya River along their shared border, marking a significant step toward expanding transport links and strengthening economic and commercial cooperation between the two countries.
The opening ceremony was conducted via video link by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song, who officially signaled the start of traffic on the newly built bridge. The structure was named after Yakov Novichenko, a Red Army officer who was later recognized as a Hero of Labour in North Korea.
Mishustin praised the workers, engineers, designers and construction teams involved in the project, describing the bridge as the result of joint efforts and professional cooperation between the two sides.
The agreement to build the crossing was signed in 2024 in the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Construction officially began in April 2025 following a launch ceremony attended remotely by the two countries’ prime ministers.
The new road connection is expected to complement the existing railway bridge between Russia and North Korea, which has previously handled part of the cross-border traffic but was considered insufficient to meet growing transportation needs. The new infrastructure is designed to provide a year-round land route, potentially allowing companies to increase cargo volumes, reduce logistics costs and improve the reliability of deliveries.
The bridge stretches for approximately five kilometres and includes two lanes for road traffic. A new border checkpoint has also been established in the Khasan area on the Russian side, featuring 10 traffic lanes designed to facilitate the movement of vehicles and passengers.
According to Russian authorities, once operating at full capacity, the checkpoint could process around 300 vehicles and more than 2,300 people per day, with the possibility of expanding its capacity in the future.
The project comes as Moscow and Pyongyang seek to deepen their bilateral ties across several areas. Improved transport infrastructure could facilitate the movement of goods and people while creating additional opportunities for cross-border trade and economic exchanges.
The new bridge is therefore expected to play a practical role in improving connectivity between the two countries, while also reflecting the broader development of their economic relationship. Its impact will depend on the volume of traffic and trade that ultimately passes through the new route.
