Lithuania warns of potential Russian infrastructure attacks and strengthens security measures
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has said the country has intelligence indicating that Russia is preparing potential attacks targeting critical infrastructure, prompting authorities to reinforce security measures around key energy and transport facilities.
Speaking in an interview published on Wednesday, Nauseda said the information had led the government to increase preventive protections, although he stressed that there was no specific intelligence identifying when or where such attacks might occur.
Precautionary measures introduced
Lithuania is tightening security at strategic infrastructure sites as a precaution against possible threats. The enhanced measures focus on sectors considered essential to national resilience, including energy networks and transportation systems.
Nauseda did not indicate that Lithuania itself had been identified as the intended target, nor did he provide details about the source or scope of the intelligence assessment. Instead, he emphasized that the government's response is aimed at reducing risks and improving preparedness.
Heightened security concerns in Europe
The warning comes amid continued tensions between Russia and European countries following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Governments across the region have increased surveillance and security around critical infrastructure, particularly assets linked to energy supply, communications and transport.
Officials in several European nations have expressed concern in recent years about the possibility of sabotage or hybrid threats targeting facilities considered vital to economic stability and public services.
Baltic allies remain focused on resilience
Lithuania, together with its Baltic partners and NATO allies, has continued to strengthen national security and infrastructure protection as part of broader regional defense efforts.
The latest comments from President Nauseda underscore the importance that Baltic governments place on safeguarding critical infrastructure against emerging threats while maintaining close coordination with international partners on security and intelligence matters.
