China-Nepal: After the Landslide, the Main Border Crossing Falls Silent

At the border between China and Nepal, images of intense commercial activity have given way to a devastated landscape. At the Gyirong crossing, the main passage between Tibet and Nepal, rescue teams continue their search following the massive landslide on August 26. Hundreds of people remain missing, and no signs of the activity that once animated this strategic crossing are visible.

Search Operations Still Ongoing

On Sunday, about twenty Chinese rescuers equipped with construction machinery, shovels, and ground-penetrating detectors continued their search in the disaster area.

The teams have divided the area into seven intervention zones. Four of these zones have already undergone complete searches, according to officials cited by Reuters.

The disaster has turned the border crossing into one of the main symbols of the damage caused by the severe weather that has hit the region. The landslide occurred after the collapse of a glacier on the Nepalese side, sending a mass of mud and debris toward the infrastructure near the border.

A Vital Crossing After the 2015 Earthquake

Before the disaster, Gyirong was a particularly important point for trade between the two countries.

Its significance had greatly increased after the earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015. The disaster severely damaged another border crossing and forced some of the traffic to reroute to Gyirong.

Over the years, the site had thus become a major route for goods, people, and cross-border exchanges between Tibet and Nepal.

The destruction of the crossing therefore represents not only a humanitarian disaster but also a shock to a trade link that had gradually gained importance.

Foreign Nationals Still Missing

The disaster also raises concerns beyond the Chinese and Nepalese populations.

Among the missing persons are reportedly foreign nationals, including Hindu pilgrims heading to Mount Kailash, a sacred site for several religious traditions.

Diplomats have reported these disappearances as searches continue in the hardest-hit areas.

A Strategic Border Brutally Paralyzed

The destruction of Gyirong occurs in a region where transport infrastructure plays a crucial role in economic relations between China and Nepal.

For authorities, the priority remains humanitarian: locating missing persons, securing affected areas, and continuing rescue operations in an environment made particularly difficult by the extent of the damage.

The contrast is now striking. Where goods, travelers, and pilgrims once passed, rescuers move through the rubble in search of survivors.

The reconstruction of the border crossing and the resumption of trade appear to be medium-term challenges. But for now, Gyirong is primarily the scene of a rescue operation, following a disaster that abruptly interrupted one of the main land links between China and Nepal.
