Morocco inaugurates new Timenkar middle school in Al Haouz province

A new middle school in Timenkar, in Morocco’s Al Haouz province, was inaugurated on September 7 in Aourir, on the Timenkar plateau at an altitude of 2,100 meters. The facility represents another milestone in the reconstruction efforts launched following the 2023 earthquake.

Covering 984 square meters, the school includes five classrooms, a multimedia room, a practical work room, a library, a sports area and accommodation for teachers. It currently serves 346 students, 54% of them girls, and provides educational services to 13 surrounding villages.

Education and local development

Designed by architect and anthropologist Salima Naji, the school combines local stone, traditional craftsmanship and sustainable architectural principles. The project seeks to bring together local heritage and modern educational infrastructure.

The inauguration brought together local authorities, project partners, students, families, craftspeople and residents. The ceremony included testimonies, a tour of the school, the distribution of schoolbags, tree planting and a traditional tea ceremony hosted by the local community.

A public-private-associative partnership

The project was developed through a partnership involving public, private and community organizations. The Mécénat Servier endowment fund contributed €500,000, while L’Heure Joyeuse acted as a trusted third party and monitored the project.

The Tizi N’Oucheg Development Association served as project owner, with Open Village acting as delegated project owner.

Beyond rebuilding infrastructure, the Timenkar school reflects a broader approach to reconstruction in Al Haouz, placing education, local skills and community mobilization at the center of sustainable development and the future of young people in the region.
