A trapeze artist dies after falling during a circus show in Germany
A tragic accident struck a circus performance in Bautzen, Saxony, on Saturday, September 27. A 27-year-old Spanish trapeze artist lost her life after falling from a height of about five meters in front of an audience of around one hundred people, including many children.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but the performer died instantly, according to police spokesperson Stefan Heiduck, as reported by German media. A psychological support team was immediately deployed to assist shocked spectators and members of the troupe.
The circus had just opened its season the day before and several shows were scheduled for the coming days. Following the accident, authorities indicated that the dismantling of the big top was now likely.
Ralf Huppertz, president of the Association of German Circus Companies (VDCU), described the accident as “deeply tragic” and emphasized that trapeze artists are fully aware of the risks of their profession. “Five meters is not considered an extreme height for trained acrobats, so this must have been an extraordinary stroke of bad luck,” he explained.
Police are treating the incident as a workplace accident, with no evidence pointing to third-party involvement. Investigators will now examine whether safety protocols were properly followed.
The mayor of Bautzen, Karsten Vogt, expressed his condolences: “On behalf of the city, I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the victim’s family and loved ones. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy.”
