19-Year-Old Moroccan Student Makes History on Kilimanjaro Summit

Sofia Moughil, a 19-year-old Moroccan commerce student studying in England, has etched her name in the record books by becoming the youngest Moroccan woman to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak at 5,895 meters.

Moughil's journey to the summit began in her early years, nurtured by her father's passion for mountain hiking. "My father introduced me to the mountains when I was young. He's a great lover of mountain hiking, and I had the opportunity to do a lot of hiking with him," she shared in a recent interview with 2M.ma.

The ascent demanded rigorous preparation spanning three to four months. Moughil developed a comprehensive training regimen that included running three to seven kilometers three times weekly, complemented by regular gym sessions. Despite her background in athletics, including experience in running, pilates, yoga, and dance, the climb presented formidable challenges.

The seven-day expedition tested both physical and mental limits. "We walk about five to six hours daily in temperatures of minus 15 degrees, waking up every morning at six," Moughil explained. The most significant challenge came from altitude adaptation, particularly during a demanding ascent from 3,900 to 4,700 meters in a single morning, which brought severe headaches and fatigue.

Upon reaching the summit, Moughil experienced what she describes as an unforgettable moment of triumph. "I think I will never forget it in my life. It's a feeling of accomplishment, of success, because we've been struggling for five days, walking with a single objective in mind - to reach the summit," she reflected.

Looking ahead, Moughil has already set her sights on new horizons, contemplating an expedition to Nepal's mountains, including a possible partial ascent of Mount Everest. Her achievement serves as an inspiration to young adventurers, encapsulated in her message: "Life is short, and you have to dare to step out of your comfort zone. I set myself an extreme challenge out of nowhere, without any mountain experience, and I think it's good proof that we can all achieve our goals with a little willpower and determination."

The young mountaineer's accomplishment not only marks a personal milestone but also adds to Morocco's growing legacy of young adventurers pushing boundaries in extreme sports and outdoor achievements.
