Russia dismisses Zelenskyy's proposal for territory exchange amid escalating tensions
Russia has firmly rejected a proposal by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to exchange occupied Ukrainian territory for regions in the western Kursk region, which are held by Ukrainian forces. The Kremlin's spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, stated that such a swap was “impossible,” reinforcing Russia’s stance that it will never entertain discussions of territory exchanges. Peskov further warned that Ukrainian forces currently in Russian-held areas would either be “destroyed” or pushed back.
The tension escalated following a missile and drone attack by Russia on Kyiv, which resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, including a child. Russian Defense officials claimed to have targeted Ukrainian military-industrial sites, which include drone production facilities. Ukrainian authorities have reported significant damage to apartment complexes, office buildings, and civilian infrastructure as a result of the attack.
In response to the ongoing violence, Zelenskyy reiterated his call for international unity and pressure on Russia. He emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not pursuing peace but continues to target civilians and cities. Zelenskyy also remarked that Ukraine’s territorial integrity remains a priority, though he did not specify which areas would be exchanged in his proposal.
Zelenskyy is expected to meet US Vice President JD Vance at the Munich Security Conference, where discussions on halting the conflict may continue. Former US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Keith Kellogg, is also set to visit Ukraine next week to explore a potential resolution.
This escalating situation remains a critical point of concern as international leaders weigh in on potential solutions to the war in Ukraine.
