Pope Leo XIV calls for unity and renewal in the face of modern challenges

Pope Leo XIV held a significant meeting with the cardinals who elected him as the 267th pontiff of the Catholic Church. In a private gathering, he articulated the rationale behind his choice of the name Leo XIV, emphasizing the contemporary Church's need to confront challenges akin to a new industrial revolution and the rise of artificial intelligence.

In his address, Leo XIV referenced Pope Leo XIII and his historic encyclical, Rerum Novarum, which addressed social issues during the first industrial revolution. He underscored the importance of the Church’s social doctrine in responding to today's challenges regarding human dignity, justice, and labor.

The new Pope urged the cardinals to renew their commitment to the path established by the Second Vatican Council, a journey that has been astutely recalled and updated by Pope Francis in his apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium. He highlighted essential themes from this exhortation, including the primacy of Christ, the missionary conversion of the Church, and the need for inclusive dialogue with the contemporary world.

In a poignant moment, Leo XIV referred to the cardinals as his "closest collaborators," expressing that their support alleviated the burden of his new responsibilities. He extended gratitude to Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the Dean of the College of Cardinals, and Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, the Camarlengo, for their invaluable contributions during the sede vacante and the conclave.

The Pope acknowledged the legacy of his predecessors and emphasized the necessity of embracing the "valuable heritage" left by Pope Francis, marked by dedication to service and a profound trust in God. He encouraged the cardinals to be attentive to the voice of Christ, suggesting that divine communication is often found in quiet moments rather than grandiose displays.

Leo XIV also recognized the affection displayed by Catholics worldwide following Pope Francis's passing, affirming that the Church's true greatness lies in the unity of its diverse members under Christ.

In his closing remarks, the Pope invoked the desire expressed by Saint Paul VI at the start of his pontificate: a plea for a great flame of faith and love to spread across the world, fostering collaboration and divine benevolence.

Following his address, Leo XIV engaged in discussions with the cardinals, revisiting topics raised during general congregations prior to the conclave. Vatican News reported that the meeting lasted two hours, fostering an open dialogue about the Church's future.
