In a significant move on the eve of Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration on January 20, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) released a comprehensive map of Morocco, prominently featuring the Saharan provinces. This release underscores the United States’ continued recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the region, a stance first formalized in 2020 under the Trump administration and upheld by President Joe Biden during his tenure.

The map, accompanied by an official statement, reiterates the US government’s position that the Sahara is an integral part of Morocco. This policy, initially enacted through a proclamation by President Trump in December 2020, has remained consistent despite facing opposition from certain factions within the Democratic Party, particularly its left wing, as well as some Republican lawmakers with ties to Algeria.

Morocco has welcomed the CIA’s reaffirmation, viewing it as a positive signal for future diplomatic engagements. With Trump’s return to the White House, Moroccan officials are optimistic about advancing plans to establish a US consulate in Dakhla, a key city in the Sahara. This initiative was initially promised in 2020 as part of the broader agreement that saw the US recognize Moroccan sovereignty over the region.

The release of the map and the accompanying statement highlight the strategic importance of US-Morocco relations, particularly in the context of regional stability and economic cooperation. As the new administration takes office, all eyes will be on whether the US will follow through on its commitment to open a diplomatic presence in Dakhla, further solidifying its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity.
