Evolving French perspectives on Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria

A recent survey by Ifop-Fiducial for Sud Radio sheds light on the opinions of the French public regarding Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria. Morocco emerged as the most positively viewed country, with 68% of respondents expressing favorable opinions. Tunisia followed closely at 60%, while Algeria ranked lower at 29%. Notably, Algeria's score showed a slight improvement compared to 2012, when only 26% viewed the country favorably.

The survey highlighted that political views significantly influence these perceptions. Morocco, for instance, enjoys widespread support among Green Party members, with 81% expressing positive sentiments. In contrast, National Rally supporters were particularly negative, with only 14% having a favorable view of Algeria.

When considering French-Algerian relations, most respondents (74%) believe that Algeria gains more from the partnership, a perspective rooted in the 1970s. This view was most strongly held by Republicans (94%) and Renaissance supporters (91%), but less so by France Insoumise supporters, where only 38% agreed.

The poll also explored French opinions on specific policies regarding Algeria. A significant majority (67%) favored reducing development aid to Algeria, and 64% supported France's recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara. Additionally, there was notable support (61%) for canceling agreements with Algeria, such as the 1968 visa and family reunification deals. Republicans were the strongest proponents of this stance, with 79% in favor, while only 35% of France Insoumise supporters agreed.

Relations between France and Morocco have improved in recent years. A notable instance of this cooperation was Morocco’s successful mediation to secure the release of four French nationals detained in Burkina Faso. King Mohammed VI’s intervention was recognized by French President Emmanuel Macron as a significant gesture of support for France. This strengthened humanitarian action helped build trust between the two countries.

Additionally, France has increasingly aligned with Morocco's priorities, particularly regarding the Sahara conflict. Economic relations remain robust, with French businesses contributing to Morocco's development, particularly in infrastructure and renewable energy.
