Moroccan Coastal Gem Essaouira Expands European Access with New French Flight Routes
The historic coastal city of Essaouira is poised to strengthen its position as a premier Moroccan tourism destination with the announcement of three new direct flight routes connecting it to major French cities starting April 2025.
Building on its record-breaking tourism success in 2024, which saw over one million visitors, Essaouira-Mogador Airport will welcome new direct flights to Paris-Beauvais, Lyon-Saint Exupéry, and Nantes. The expansion marks a significant development in the city's accessibility to European travelers.
Ryanair will pioneer the initiative in April 2025 with direct flights to Paris-Beauvais, responding to increasing traveler demand. Following this, EasyJet will reinstate its previously suspended Lyon connection in May 2025, reconnecting southeastern France with the UNESCO World Heritage site. The expansion will culminate in July 2025 with Transavia launching services to Nantes, opening new opportunities for visitors from western France.
"These new air links are part of a broader strategy to enhance Essaouira's tourism appeal and improve connectivity with key French destinations," explained Abdelmounaim Aoutoul, director of Essaouira-Mogador Airport.
The timing of these routes capitalizes on Essaouira's remarkable growth in tourism. The airport reported 171,892 passengers in the first nine months of 2024, representing a 30% increase from the previous year. More impressively, the city achieved over three million overnight stays in classified accommodations, with additional significant activity in the informal accommodation sector.
Ridouane Khan, President of the Regional Tourism Council (CRT), emphasized the city's evolution from a seasonal destination to a year-round attraction. "Essaouira is now welcoming visitors throughout the year, in winter, summer, autumn, and spring," he noted, highlighting the transformation of the "City of Trade Winds" into a consistent tourism draw.
Each route will operate two to three weekly flights, providing regular and convenient access for French travelers to experience Essaouira's rich cultural heritage, historic medina, and renowned coastal atmosphere.
