Zelenskyy reveals readiness of peace documents with Trump team
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on January 13 that negotiations with the Trump administration have reached a critical stage, with key documents on security guarantees and reconstruction nearly ready for signing. This development comes as G7 leaders prepare to meet Trump and Zelenskyy at the World Economic Forum in Davos next week to seal post-ceasefire arrangements.
In a video call on Monday with US Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal, Zelenskyy described Ukraine's talks with Trump and his team as highly productive. He briefed them on Russia's relentless combined assaults on energy infrastructure, involving hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles each day amid what he called a brutally cold winter. Zelenskyy stressed that air defense missiles remain Ukraine's top priority.
The discussion also covered a bipartisan sanctions bill, co-authored by Graham and Blumenthal and recently approved by Trump, which would impose 500 percent tariffs on countries purchasing Russian oil, gas, or uranium. Zelenskyy urged maximizing all possible pressure on Russia, emphasizing that ending the war hinges primarily on the United States and its president.
G7 leaders, including those from Italy, Germany, France, Canada, and the United Kingdom, along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, plan to attend the Davos forum on January 21. Trump will lead the largest US delegation ever sent there, featuring Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and key negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The gathering aims to finalize security protocols and a $800 billion, decade-long reconstruction deal crafted by US envoys in Paris.
Despite diplomatic momentum, Zelenskyy voiced frustration over slow progress in funding the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), a joint mechanism for procuring US weapons. He noted during a meeting at the commander-in-chief's headquarters that the program needs urgent resourcing, with insufficient action taken in January. His negotiation team maintains daily contact with US counterparts, coordinating schedules as documents stand ready for signature in many respects. Zelenskyy acknowledged Washington's ongoing dialogue with Moscow on a foundational war-ending document.
