Vodafone considers stake transfer to strengthen India unit, report says
Vodafone Group is considering transferring part of its 19% stake in its Indian joint venture Vodafone Idea into the local unit’s treasury as part of a strategy to strengthen its financial position, according to a report from Bloomberg News.
The move is seen as an alternative to injecting fresh capital from the UK-based telecom group and is intended to support Vodafone Idea’s ongoing efforts to raise debt and stabilize its balance sheet. The company has been under pressure due to heavy liabilities and competitive challenges in India’s highly contested telecom market.
The proposed share transfer could later allow Vodafone Idea to sell the shares in order to generate additional funds. These resources would be used to meet government obligations and invest in network expansion as the company attempts to regain market share from strong competitors such as Reliance Jio Infocomm.
The development comes after the Indian government reduced the company’s outstanding dues related to spectrum usage fees and other regulatory charges. The revised liability is significantly lower than earlier estimates, easing some financial pressure on the telecom operator.
Vodafone Idea, in which the Indian government holds a substantial stake, has been struggling for years with debt, intense competition, and declining profitability in one of the world’s largest telecom markets.
The dispute over adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues has been a long-standing issue in India’s telecom sector. The AGR framework determines how telecom operators calculate licence fees and spectrum payments, and it has been the subject of prolonged legal and financial disagreements between operators and the government.
Neither Vodafone Group nor Vodafone Idea has officially commented on the reported stake transfer proposal.
Analysts say the move, if implemented, could provide short-term financial relief while highlighting the continued structural challenges facing telecom operators in India’s price-sensitive and highly competitive market.
