US raises alarm over China’s unprecedented military expansion

US raises alarm over China’s unprecedented military expansion

China’s accelerating military buildup has sparked alarm in Washington, with US officials warning that the scale and speed of Beijing’s defense expansion represent a historic challenge to American power. Speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum in California, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described China’s growing military capabilities as “a historic buildup” that demands an equally strong response from the United States.

China’s rapidly growing naval power

Hegseth underscored China’s shipbuilding dominance, noting that for every eight warships constructed by Beijing, the United States produces fewer than two. Chinese shipyards now outpace American capacity by roughly 230%, giving China the world’s largest navy both in size and modernity. US officials view this imbalance as a serious threat to maritime stability and the global balance of power, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Defense Secretary emphasized that China is not only expanding its navy but also advancing its nuclear and missile capabilities at a pace that far exceeds US production. This, he warned, risks undermining deterrence and shifting the strategic balance in Asia.

A plan to rebuild America’s defense base

In response to Beijing’s rapid rise, Hegseth announced that the Trump administration has launched a sweeping reform of the US defense industrial base and procurement systems. He described it as “a complete game change” focused on restoring production speed and efficiency. The overhaul aims to strengthen America’s capacity to produce advanced weaponry, rebuild its shipyards, and support allies facing growing pressure from China’s assertive expansion.

Hegseth highlighted ongoing reforms in the acquisitions and foreign military sales processes, designed to allow the US to deliver critical defense systems faster and with fewer bureaucratic delays. “We have to act with urgency,” he said, framing the effort as essential to maintaining what he called “the arsenal of freedom.”

Strategic consequences for Indo-Pacific allies

The implications for Indo-Pacific partners are profound. The United States has reinforced ties with allies such as India, Japan, and Australia through the Quad partnership, viewing their cooperation as central to countering China’s maritime and technological assertiveness. India, in particular, has intensified defense collaboration with Washington in areas such as maritime surveillance and emerging technology, amid growing concerns about Beijing’s activities in the Indian Ocean.

For these nations, America’s defense industrial resurgence could serve as both reassurance and deterrence. A stronger US military base would help sustain collective security arrangements in the region, ensuring balance and stability in a zone marked by China’s expanding influence.
