US Congressman warns of Russian, Iranian, and Cuban interference in Sahara dispute
Congressman Joe Wilson addressed Congress on Wednesday, expressing concern over foreign powers' involvement in the Sahara conflict while reaffirming US support for Morocco's territorial claims. Wilson specifically highlighted the actions of Russia, Iran, and Cuba in supporting the Polisario Front.
Wilson, who chairs the US-Morocco Caucus, referenced former President Donald Trump's recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over Sahara and emphasized Morocco's position as a long-standing US ally. He criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iran, and Cuba for what he described as actively destabilizing West Africa through their support of the Polisario Front.
The congressman also addressed a recent diplomatic incident involving Algeria's hosting of Kurdish separatist groups, specifically the PKK and YPG, for meetings with Polisario militia in Tindouf. This move drew criticism for potentially undermining Turkey, a NATO ally, though Algeria later denied extending an official invitation.
