Ukraine’s Zelenskiy visits Sweden for aviation cooperation talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is visiting Sweden for discussions focused on aviation and defense cooperation, according to the Swedish government. The meeting is being hosted by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
The talks are expected to include updates on potential military aviation agreements, particularly involving Sweden’s Gripen fighter jets developed by Saab. Earlier agreements between the two countries outlined a possible future sale of up to 150 Gripen E aircraft to Ukraine, although delivery timelines remain long-term.
In the meantime, discussions have also explored the possibility of transferring earlier C/D models to strengthen Ukraine’s air capabilities more quickly. Aviation support remains a key priority for Kyiv as it continues to modernize its defense forces.
The meeting comes amid broader European efforts to support Ukraine militarily and financially. A recent European Union decision on a large financial package for Ukraine has also been linked to ongoing defense cooperation discussions among allied countries.
Following the announcement of renewed talks, Saab shares saw an increase on financial markets, reflecting investor interest in potential future contracts.
Officials from both countries have described the visit as part of a continued effort to deepen strategic defense ties and long-term cooperation in the aviation sector.
