UK PM Starmer’s chief of staff resigns over Mandelson controversy

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces growing political turmoil following the resignation of his chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, over the controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States.

McSweeney, 48, who has played a pivotal role in Starmer’s rise within the Labour Party, publicly took responsibility for advising the prime minister to appoint Mandelson. “The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson was wrong. He has damaged our party, our country, and trust in politics itself,” McSweeney said in his resignation statement.

The move comes amid new revelations regarding Mandelson’s past relationship with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, including allegations of leaked government documents dating back to 2009 and 2010. The disclosures have prompted a police investigation and intensified scrutiny of Starmer’s judgment and leadership, just 18 months into his tenure.
