UEFA and Concacaf explore plans for a joint Nations League
European and North American football could be heading toward a major new competition as UEFA and Concacaf discuss the possibility of creating a joint Nations League involving national teams from both confederations.
According to reports, the proposed tournament could feature as many as 96 national teams and potentially begin after the 2028 UEFA European Championship. The teams would reportedly be divided into different tiers, with the competition culminating in a Final Four tournament.
The top division could bring together some of Europe’s strongest national teams, including Spain, France, England and Germany, alongside leading Concacaf sides such as Mexico, the United States and Canada. Such a format would create regular competitive fixtures between teams that rarely meet outside major international tournaments.
Under the proposal, group-stage matches could be scheduled during international windows in September, October and November. Knockout matches would then potentially take place in March, while the Final Four could be held in June.
The project could also expand beyond Europe and North America. The Asian Football Confederation has reportedly expressed interest in joining a broader global Nations League concept, potentially transforming the competition into a major international tournament involving teams from several confederations.
A joint competition could provide national teams with more meaningful matches while offering football associations additional commercial and broadcasting opportunities. It could also increase the frequency of high-profile international encounters outside traditional continental championships and the FIFA World Cup.
However, such a project would require coordination over an already crowded international football calendar. Travel distances, player workload, qualification systems and the interests of other confederations would all need to be considered before a final format could be established.
If the proposal moves forward, a unified Nations League could represent a significant change in the organization of international football and create new competitive rivalries between leading teams from different regions.
