Samsung considers $79 billion payout to shareholders amid ai boom

Samsung Electronics is considering a major shareholder-return program worth up to 110 trillion won, or approximately $79 billion, as the South Korean technology giant seeks to capitalize on the strong growth of the semiconductor industry driven by the global artificial intelligence boom.

The potential plan would allow Samsung to return part of its growing cash flow to investors through dividends and share buybacks. According to reports, the company is examining the initiative as demand rises for advanced chips used in artificial intelligence systems, data centers and high-performance computing.

The semiconductor market has entered a period of rapid expansion as technology companies and cloud providers invest heavily in computing infrastructure. This has created significant opportunities for major chip manufacturers, particularly those capable of producing advanced memory and processing components.

Samsung is also facing growing pressure from investors to improve shareholder returns. Its domestic rival SK Hynix has announced a large-scale share repurchase program, increasing expectations that Samsung could introduce an equally ambitious strategy to strengthen investor confidence.

Share buybacks and dividends are widely used by large corporations to distribute excess cash to shareholders. Such measures can also signal confidence in future earnings and cash generation, although they must be balanced against the need to finance long-term investments.

For Samsung, maintaining sufficient capital for semiconductor research, production capacity and artificial intelligence-related technologies remains a key priority. The company operates in an industry that requires substantial and continuous investment, particularly as competition intensifies in advanced memory and high-performance computing.

The final size and structure of the potential shareholder-return program have not yet been confirmed. Samsung could ultimately divide the funds between dividends and share repurchases depending on its financial position and investment requirements.

The discussions come as the global artificial intelligence industry continues to generate strong demand for semiconductors. Data centers require increasingly powerful and energy-efficient components, creating new growth opportunities for manufacturers across the technology supply chain.

A large shareholder-return program could make Samsung's shares more attractive to investors and strengthen its position in the financial markets. However, the company will have to carefully balance immediate returns with the significant capital required to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving semiconductor and artificial intelligence sectors.
