Greece: Six Suspected Members of Rouvikonas Sought After an 'Anti-Zionist Patrol'
The Greek police have identified six individuals suspected of belonging to the anarchist collective Rouvikonas, as part of an investigation into an action carried out in late June in Thessaloniki. The authorities mention facts that may constitute racist offenses, while the group claims to mobilize against Israeli economic interests in Greece and in support of the Palestinians.
A judicial investigation opened in Thessaloniki has led the Greek police to search for six presumed members of Rouvikonas, an anarchist collective known for its militant actions. Authorities announced on Saturday, August 22, that they had identified five men and one woman, aged between 32 and 46, following an operation organized in the country's second city at the end of June.
According to local police, these six individuals were identified as part of a preliminary investigation conducted under the authority of the prosecutor's office. A criminal procedure has also been initiated. The authorities present them as being involved in acts classified as 'racist offenses.'
An Action Claimed in Central Thessaloniki
The events date back to the night of June 27. Presumed members of Rouvikonas had conducted an operation in the area of Mavili Square, in the heart of Thessaloniki. The collective itself described this initiative as an 'anti-Zionist patrol,' before publishing images and videos of it on social media.
The action was part of a militant campaign denouncing, according to Rouvikonas, Israeli economic influence in Greece. In its communications, the collective claimed to want to contest Israeli investments and financial interests present in the country while expressing its support for the Palestinian cause.
However, this justification did not prevent the Greek authorities from opening an investigation into the conditions and nature of the intervention.
Rouvikonas, a Collective Born During the Greek Crisis
Founded in Athens in the early 2010s, Rouvikonas developed in the particularly tense context of the Greek economic crisis and the mobilizations against austerity policies. The group is regularly associated with spectacular militant actions and operations aimed at drawing attention to its political demands.
Over the years, the collective has notably used social media to claim its initiatives and disseminate its own images. This strategy allows it to transform ground actions into political communication operations.
The Thessaloniki case occurs in a context where positions related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are causing strong tensions in Europe. The boundary between criticism of a state's policy, pro-Palestinian activism, and expressions that could be considered anti-Semitic is particularly the subject of ongoing debates.
Greek Authorities Emphasize the Criminal Nature of the Investigation
For now, the six identified individuals are being sought as part of the procedure initiated by the authorities. Their identification alone does not constitute a declaration of guilt: the facts will need to be examined within the framework of the judicial process.
The Greek police have chosen to emphasize the classification retained in the investigation, mentioning offenses of a racist nature. Rouvikonas, for its part, presents its action from a political angle and claims to have wanted to denounce the presence of Israeli interests in Greece and to express solidarity with the Palestinians.
The investigation will now need to determine precisely the nature of the acts committed during this 'patrol' and the potential individual responsibilities of the identified persons.
A Case That Revives Tensions Around Anti-Zionism
Beyond the police procedure, the case illustrates the growing sensitivity of mobilizations related to the conflict in the Middle East. In a public space where demonstrations supporting the Palestinians coexist with controversies over anti-Semitism, authorities are faced with the necessity of distinguishing political positions from behaviors that may constitute offenses.
In Thessaloniki, this distinction will now be at the heart of the procedure initiated after Rouvikonas's action.
