France recalls 260,000 condoms over serious safety concerns

French authorities have ordered the withdrawal of around 260,000 condoms from the market after inspections identified products that failed to meet required safety standards. More than 40,000 of the affected condoms are believed to have been sold through online platforms.

The French Directorate-General for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) warned that some of the products could be defective, potentially increasing the risk of tearing or microscopic holes during use.

Such defects could have serious consequences, including exposure to sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies. The authorities have therefore called for the affected products to be removed from physical and online stores.

The products were reportedly found without the required CE marking, which indicates compliance with applicable European regulatory requirements. Following the discovery, authorities carried out inspections at retailers and identified additional irregularities involving some of the products.

Consumers who have recently used condoms covered by the recall are being advised to seek appropriate medical advice and consider screening for sexually transmitted infections when necessary. Pregnancy testing may also be appropriate depending on the circumstances.

The recall highlights the importance of purchasing condoms from reliable retailers and checking packaging and regulatory information before use. Consumers should also pay attention to official product-recall notices issued by French authorities.

The scale of the withdrawal is particularly significant given the widespread use of condoms in France. More than 115 million condoms were reportedly sold in the country in 2024, underlining the importance of strict quality controls for products directly linked to sexual and reproductive health.

The French recall forms part of broader European efforts to strengthen consumer protection and ensure that products placed on the market comply with safety and quality requirements. Regulatory authorities regularly conduct inspections and can order products to be withdrawn when serious deficiencies are identified.

The case also demonstrates the challenges posed by online marketplaces, where non-compliant products can reach consumers quickly and across multiple regions. French authorities have consequently urged online platforms to remove the affected products and cooperate with enforcement measures.

For consumers, the incident serves as a reminder that approved products should be purchased through trustworthy channels and that official recall information should be checked whenever a safety warning is issued.
