Belgium nominates Hans Kluge for WHO director-general
Belgium has officially put forward Hans Kluge as its candidate to become the next director-general of the World Health Organization, launching his campaign to lead the global health agency.
Kluge, a Belgian physician aged 57, announced the nomination on Friday, expressing his appreciation for the confidence placed in him by the Belgian government. He said he viewed the candidacy as an opportunity to take on a major responsibility at a critical time for global health.
Kluge has served as WHO Regional Director for Europe since 2020. Under the organization’s rules, he has stepped down from his current position while pursuing his candidacy for the top leadership role.
During the campaign period, Kluge said he intends to consult with WHO member states, international partners and health professionals on the ground. The discussions are expected to focus on their priorities, expectations and visions for the future of the organization and global health.
The election will determine the successor to current WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of Ethiopia. The vote is scheduled to take place during the 80th World Health Assembly in May 2027.
WHO member states have until September 24, 2026, to submit candidates for the position. The selection process is expected to attract international attention as governments assess the leadership and priorities they want the organization to pursue in the coming years.
Kluge’s experience within the WHO, particularly his leadership of the European regional office, is likely to be a central element of his campaign as he seeks support from member states.
