Venezuela: Opposition Deputy Under Investigation After Proposal for Dollarization
The proposal to replace the bolivar with the US dollar is sparking a new political confrontation in Venezuela. Opposition deputy Antonio Ecarri is facing a parliamentary investigation after advocating for a complete dollarization of the economy, a move that has also cost him the presidency of the parliamentary friendship group between Venezuela and the United States.
The suggestion to fundamentally reform the Venezuelan monetary system immediately triggered a political backlash. The president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, announced on Saturday, August 22, the initiation of proceedings against opposition deputy Antonio Ecarri after he expressed support for the dollarization of the economy.
The measure announced by Parliament could also lead to Ecarri's removal from the presidency of the parliamentary friendship group between Venezuela and the United States, a position he held until now.
A Monetary Proposal Provoking Political Retaliation
Antonio Ecarri advocates for a gradual abandonment of the bolivar in favor of the US dollar. To support this direction, the parliamentarian relies on the recommendations of American economist Steve Hanke, known for his work on monetary policies and economies facing significant instability.
However, within Venezuelan institutions, this proposal is met with hostility. The president of the National Assembly announced the opening of an investigation aimed, according to his statements, at determining any wrongdoing by the deputy.
The procedure must now establish the facts that could be attributed to Antonio Ecarri and their potential consequences.
Ecarri Could Lose a Parliamentary Position
Jorge Rodríguez also announced that the deputy would be removed from the presidency of the parliamentary friendship group between Venezuela and the United States.
This decision adds an institutional dimension to a controversy that initially revolved around economic policy. The parliamentary group constitutes a space for dialogue and relations between Venezuelan and American elected officials.
Ecarri's removal comes at a time when relations between Caracas and Washington remain a particularly sensitive topic in Venezuelan political life.
Dollarization: A Controversial Economic Choice
The proposal defended by the deputy is not merely a technical modification of the currency used in transactions. Complete dollarization would mean relinquishing a significant portion of the monetary policy instruments linked to the bolivar.
Its proponents may see it as a means to strengthen price stability and restore confidence in the currency. Conversely, its detractors highlight the potential consequences of such a loss of monetary sovereignty and the limitations it would impose on national economic policy.
In Venezuela, where the monetary issue remains closely tied to the economic difficulties faced by the country, the debate thus takes on a strong political dimension.
A Matter Now in the Hands of Institutions
With the opening of this investigation, Antonio Ecarri's proposal now transcends the realm of economic debate. Parliament intends to examine the actions of the deputy and determine any responsibilities that may be attributed to him.
For the opposition, this procedure could be seen as a political response to an economic stance. From the perspective of parliamentary authorities, it is presented as a process aimed at establishing potential wrongdoings.
The continuation of the procedure will determine whether this case remains limited to an institutional sanction or if it will take on a broader dimension in the debate over Venezuela's economic future.
