Sofia becomes Europe’s favorite name for baby girls
The name Sofia is emerging as one of the most popular choices for newborn girls across Europe, reflecting a growing preference for traditional names that remain adaptable across different languages and cultures.
According to official statistics cited by Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Sofia continues to rank among the most popular girls’ names in several European countries. Its popularity is particularly strong in Italy, Poland, Spain and parts of the Baltic region, while the name has also been gaining ground in countries such as France and the United Kingdom.
In Germany, Sofia has enjoyed remarkable longevity. The name first gained widespread popularity in eastern Germany before expanding across the country in the 1990s. It has remained among the leading choices for parents and has reportedly topped the national rankings for three consecutive years since 2023.
Italy is another major market for the name. In 2024, 4,636 baby girls were registered as Sofia, representing around 2.59% of female births. Although its popularity has declined slightly from its previous peaks, the name remains firmly established among the country's favorite choices.
In Poland, approximately 5,000 girls were given the name in 2025, accounting for around 5% of newborn girls and placing Sofia at the top of the national ranking.
The name has also maintained a strong position in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. In Slovakia, Sofia has ranked first since 2022, while in the Czech Republic it remains among the leading names, although it is currently behind names such as Victoria.
Across the Baltic states, Sofia regularly moves between first and second place in rankings in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, demonstrating the name's broad appeal across Northern and Eastern Europe.
Spain has also embraced the name strongly. Sofia reportedly ranked first with around 3,300 newborn girls, ahead of other popular choices such as Lucia and Martina.
In Austria, the name remains popular but sits outside the top three, ranking fifth behind Emma, Emilia, Maria and Mia.
France has recorded a notable increase in the name's popularity. Sofia moved from 44th place to 29th, with approximately 1,500 newborn girls receiving the name.
In the United Kingdom, Sofia remains among the top 20 girls' names when both Sofia and Sophia spellings are taken into account. The two versions have helped maintain the name's visibility in the English-speaking world.
The name's widespread popularity can partly be explained by its meaning and linguistic versatility. Sofia comes from the ancient Greek word sophia, meaning “wisdom.” Its pronunciation is relatively easy across European languages, while the spelling can be adapted without significantly changing its identity.
The popularity of Sofia also reflects a broader naming trend among European parents, who increasingly appear drawn to names that combine historical or classical roots with a modern international character.
Rather than being associated with one particular country or culture, Sofia has developed into a genuinely cross-border name. Its continued presence in national rankings from Southern Europe to the Baltic states demonstrates how certain names can transcend linguistic and cultural boundaries.
