TikTok agrees to pay $400 million to settle U.S. child privacy case

TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, have reached a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice under which the companies will pay approximately $400 million to resolve allegations related to violations of children’s online privacy protections.

The agreement concerns a long-running legal case involving TikTok’s handling of children’s personal information and its compliance with U.S. privacy regulations. According to the Justice Department, the settlement ranks among the largest financial agreements reached under legislation protecting children’s online privacy.

Under the terms of the deal, TikTok is expected to strengthen safeguards for younger users, improve age-verification procedures and provide parents with greater control over their children’s activities on the platform. The company, however, did not admit to the allegations as part of the settlement.

The U.S. authorities also noted that TikTok has undergone significant changes since the original legal proceedings began, including adjustments to its ownership structure, management, compliance systems and privacy practices.

The settlement comes amid continued scrutiny of TikTok in the United States. The platform has faced political and regulatory pressure over data protection, national security concerns and its relationship with ByteDance, a Chinese technology company.

The agreement also follows broader efforts by Washington to place TikTok’s U.S. operations under a structure with greater American ownership and control. ByteDance has retained a minority stake, while the platform’s future in the U.S. market has remained closely linked to regulatory and political developments.

The dispute reflects the growing pressure on major social media platforms to strengthen protections for minors. Regulators in the United States and elsewhere have increasingly focused on how technology companies collect and process children’s data, verify users’ ages and design parental-control systems.

For TikTok, the $400 million settlement represents a significant financial cost but also provides a degree of legal certainty as the company continues operating in one of its most important markets. The case is likely to reinforce the importance of privacy compliance and child-safety measures across the social media industry.
