Morocco strengthens its attack capabilities with AH-64E Apache helicopters
Morocco is gradually expanding the operational capabilities of its military aviation with the integration of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters into the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces. The acquisition forms part of a broader modernization strategy aimed at strengthening aerial support for ground forces and improving reconnaissance, firepower and battlefield coordination.
The AH-64E Apache is designed to perform a wide range of missions, including countering tanks and armored vehicles, providing close air support and conducting armed reconnaissance. Its advanced electronic and thermal sensors allow crews to identify potential threats over significant distances and share operational information with units and command centers in real time.
The helicopter's firepower includes Hellfire missiles as well as other weapon systems designed to engage different types of targets. The platform is also equipped for operations in both day and night conditions, with advanced protection systems and a reinforced structure intended to improve survivability in demanding operational environments.
The AH-64E is powered by two turboshaft engines and can reach a top speed of approximately 293 kilometers per hour. Its operational range is around 480 kilometers without additional fuel tanks, while its service ceiling is approximately 6,400 meters. The helicopter is operated by a two-person crew consisting of a pilot and a co-pilot responsible in particular for managing the weapons systems.
Morocco received a second batch of seven AH-64E helicopters on May 8, 2026, during a ceremony held near Cap Draa in the Tan-Tan area, ahead of the African Lion military exercises.
The first Moroccan batch, consisting of six helicopters, was delivered in March 2025. Under the government-to-government agreement signed with the United States in 2020, Morocco is expected to eventually operate a fleet of 24 Apache helicopters.
The arrival of these aircraft represents another step in the modernization of Morocco's armed forces. Their combination of reconnaissance, precision firepower, armored-target capabilities and battlefield communications can provide additional support to Moroccan ground units.
The helicopters can also operate alongside allied forces, particularly during joint exercises with the United States. Their integration therefore contributes not only to Morocco's national defense capabilities but also to greater interoperability during multinational military training and operations.
