Two skiers die in avalanche in the French Alps
Two skiers tragically lost their lives on Saturday afternoon in an avalanche near Saint-Véran, one of the highest villages in the French Alps, authorities reported. The avalanche occurred around 3 p.m. on the northern face of Tête de Longet, which reaches 3,146 meters in altitude.
The victims, born in 1997 and 1991, were part of a group of four who were skiing off-piste without professional guidance. The two remaining members of the group were unharmed.
Local authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of the accident, and autopsies are planned. This incident marks another deadly event in a year already claiming the lives of over twenty skiers across the Alps, including in France, Austria, and Switzerland.
Rescue teams continue to remind skiers of the risks of off-piste skiing and the importance of safety precautions in high-altitude areas.
