Hannibal biopic starring Denzel Washington shelved over soaring production costs
The long-awaited historical epic centered on the legendary Carthaginian commander Hannibal has reportedly been abandoned after production costs climbed to a level considered financially unsustainable.
The project, which had generated significant interest for casting Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington in the lead role and appointing acclaimed filmmaker Antoine Fuqua as director, has been halted during pre-production after years of development.
According to cinematographer Robert Richardson, who had been involved in preparations for the film for several weeks, work on the production has now stopped. The decision appears to have been driven primarily by the project's escalating budget, which reportedly approached $200 million before principal photography had even begun.
The film was expected to bring to the screen the remarkable story of Hannibal, one of history's most celebrated military commanders.
