Niger military launches security sweep after deadly attack kills 16 soldiers

Niger's armed forces have launched extensive security operations following a deadly attack in the country's western region that left 16 soldiers dead and more than 20 others injured, underscoring the persistent security challenges facing the Sahel nation.

According to official information released on Sunday, the assault targeted a military detachment on Friday in the Téra area of the Tillabéri region, near Niger's borders with Mali and Burkina Faso. The region has long been considered one of the country's most volatile areas because of the activity of armed extremist groups.

Authorities reported that 23 soldiers were wounded during the attack, including nine who sustained serious injuries. The military also said that 15 suspected attackers were killed during the confrontation.

Local reports indicated that the violence occurred along the Bankilaré–Téra road near the village of Doungouro, an area that has repeatedly experienced security incidents linked to insurgent activity.

Following the attack, Nigerien security forces launched search and clearance operations across the surrounding area in an effort to locate those responsible and restore stability. Military units remain deployed as the operation continues.

Niger has faced a prolonged insurgency for more than a decade, with armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State carrying out frequent attacks against military positions and civilian communities across the western and southeastern parts of the country.

The latest violence comes as the military-led government, which has ruled Niger since July 2023, continues to confront growing security pressures despite ongoing counterterrorism efforts. The Tillabéri region remains one of the principal fronts in the broader conflict affecting the central Sahel, where cross-border militant networks continue to challenge national security forces.
