Taylor Sheridan expands beyond America with new Scotland-set series “The Laird”

Fans of Taylor Sheridan’s acclaimed storytelling may soon see the creator venture into new territory as the screenwriter prepares a television drama set in Scotland. Titled “The Laird,” the upcoming series is expected to begin filming in late July, marking Sheridan’s first television project set outside the United States.

The new production will reportedly delve into the historical connections between Scotland and the United States, a relationship that has already been woven into the narrative of Yellowstone. In the hit franchise, the Dutton family traces its ancestry to Scotland’s Highlands, providing a historical backdrop that the new series appears ready to explore in greater depth.

Exploring Scotland’s Historical Ties to America

According to reports, The Laird will focus on the waves of Scottish migration that saw thousands of people leave their homeland in search of new opportunities across the Atlantic. The drama is expected to examine how these migrations helped shape communities in North America while highlighting the cultural and historical bonds linking the two nations.

The storyline may also address more complex chapters of Scottish history. Reports indicate that the series could explore the involvement of some Scottish landowners in the transatlantic slave trade, examining how wealth, land ownership and migration intersected during that period.

A New Direction for Taylor Sheridan

Known for creating modern Western dramas centered on American landscapes and culture, Sheridan appears to be broadening his creative scope with a production rooted in European history. If confirmed, The Laird would represent a significant departure from the settings that have defined much of his television career.

While the historical themes echo elements previously referenced in Yellowstone, it remains unclear whether the new series will share a direct narrative connection with Sheridan’s expanding television universe or stand as an entirely independent project.

Production Underway, Casting Still Unknown

Filming is scheduled to begin in Scotland later this month, although producers have yet to reveal details about the cast, production partners or an official release date.

With few details released so far, anticipation is already growing among audiences eager to see how Sheridan translates his signature storytelling style to a Scottish historical setting. If the project moves forward as planned, The Laird could become one of the most closely watched television productions linking Scottish heritage with American history.
