Apple Unveils AI-Powered Smart Home Devices to Challenge Amazon and Google
Apple is stepping up its efforts to compete in the smart home market with a new generation of connected devices powered by artificial intelligence, including an upgraded Apple TV, a refreshed HomePod mini and a new smart display called HomeView.
Announced on Tuesday, the product lineup marks a strategic shift for the technology giant as it seeks to strengthen its position in a sector where Amazon and Google have established a significant lead. Beyond hardware upgrades, the initiative reflects Apple's broader ambition to make artificial intelligence a central part of everyday household technology.
The new devices are scheduled to reach the market in stages, beginning in October and extending into 2027, depending on the product.
HomeView Takes Centre Stage in Apple's Smart Home Strategy
The most notable addition is HomeView, a connected display designed to serve as a central control point for the home. In a promotional video released by Apple, the device is presented as a single interface for managing everyday tasks and accessing digital services.
Users will be able to consult messages and calendars, make video calls, find recipes and adjust household temperatures through the display. By bringing these functions together, Apple aims to simplify the way consumers interact with connected appliances and digital services.
The device's positioning highlights a broader shift in the smart home industry: moving beyond voice commands and individual applications towards integrated systems capable of understanding requests and responding to users' needs in context.
Apple is also preparing updated versions of existing products, including its Apple TV streaming device and HomePod mini smart speaker. Together, these devices are intended to reinforce the company's presence throughout the connected home.
Artificial Intelligence Becomes Apple's Competitive Battleground
Apple's renewed push comes as it faces mounting pressure to close the gap with competitors that have invested heavily in AI-powered household assistants.
Although the company introduced Siri in 2011, its voice assistant has struggled to maintain a competitive edge as generative AI systems have raised consumer expectations for more natural, context-aware interactions.
The emergence of ChatGPT accelerated this shift, demonstrating how AI assistants could move beyond answering simple questions to handling more complex requests and conversations.
Apple has since sought external support to accelerate its AI development. In January, the company reached an agreement with Google to help advance its artificial intelligence capabilities.
In June, Apple presented an updated version of Siri designed to interact with applications on the iPhone and better understand a user's personal context. These improvements are expected to play an important role in the company's broader connected-device strategy.
The challenge is to translate those advances into a reliable household experience, where consumers increasingly expect their devices to coordinate tasks without requiring separate commands for every action.
Partnerships Signal a More Open Approach
Apple is also expanding cooperation with other manufacturers, including South Korean electronics company LG and French energy management specialist Schneider Electric, particularly in areas such as door-locking systems and smart thermostats.
These partnerships are significant because Apple's traditional strategy has centred on a tightly integrated ecosystem of proprietary hardware and software. While that approach has helped deliver consistency across its products, it has sometimes complicated compatibility with equipment from other manufacturers.
Working more closely with external partners could make Apple's smart home platform more attractive to consumers who already own connected devices from different brands.
Interoperability will be particularly important as households increasingly combine lighting, security systems, heating controls and entertainment equipment from multiple suppliers.
Amazon and Google Retain an Early Advantage
Apple is entering a market in which Amazon and Google have already established stronger positions. Both rivals have been developing generative AI features for home devices, adapting their assistants to deliver more sophisticated interactions and services.
Apple's latest announcement therefore represents an effort to regain momentum rather than an entry into an entirely new category.
Its established hardware ecosystem, software integration and brand recognition could provide a competitive advantage. However, the success of the new lineup will depend on the quality of its AI features, the availability of compatible accessories and consumers' willingness to adopt another connected-home platform.
The phased rollout also means Apple will need to maintain interest in its products over an extended period as different devices become available.
European Launch Faces Regulatory and Software Constraints
Despite the ambitions surrounding HomeView, Apple has confirmed that the device will not initially be available in the European Union because the updated version of Siri is not yet accessible in the bloc.
The limitation creates a geographical gap in the product launch at a time when European consumers represent an important market for connected electronics.
Apple has said it is working constructively with EU institutions to identify a route to market that complies with applicable legislation.
The European delay illustrates how the rollout of AI-powered consumer products depends not only on hardware readiness but also on software availability and regulatory requirements.
For Apple, the new smart home lineup is a test of whether improvements in artificial intelligence, combined with broader partnerships and a more integrated household interface, can help it narrow the gap with Amazon and Google.
