Taiwan denounces China as real security threat amid Munich conference remarks
Taiwan has firmly rejected claims by China that it upholds international peace, describing Beijing as the true threat to regional security. Lin Chia-lung, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, made the remarks on Sunday following comments by Wang Yi at the Munich Security Conference.
China maintains that Taiwan is part of its territory, a position Taipei strongly opposes. Lin emphasized that Taiwan’s sovereignty has never belonged to the People’s Republic of China, either historically, under objective reality, or according to international law.
The Taiwanese minister accused Beijing of engaging in recent military provocations in the region and of openly violating the United Nations Charter, which calls for refraining from the use or threat of force. He described these actions as reflecting a hegemonic mindset inconsistent with China’s stated commitments to international law.
China’s military conducts daily operations around Taiwan, with its latest large-scale exercises conducted near the island in December 2025. Taiwan insists that sovereignty rests with its people, citing the post-World War Two transfer to the Republic of China and rejecting Beijing’s claim based on events after 1945.
Senior Taiwanese officials, including Lin, were not invited to attend the Munich conference, highlighting the diplomatic tensions surrounding cross-strait relations. Taiwan continues to assert its autonomy and readiness to defend its territory against external threats.
