In a bid to fortify their bilateral relations, Spain has confirmed engaging in talks with Morocco to negotiate the management of airspace over the Sahara region. This disclosure follows reports of two meetings held between the two nations over the past two years, aimed at bolstering cooperation in this strategically significant area.

According to a report by Europa Press, the Spanish government acknowledged these discussions in a parliamentary response, prompted by an inquiry from an opposition MP regarding reported negotiations between Morocco and Spain on managing the airspace between the Canary Islands and Moroccan Sahara.

The government's response illuminated the seventh point of the joint declaration issued after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's meeting with King Mohammed VI in April 2022, which highlighted the initiation of "discussions on airspace management."

Europa Press further revealed, citing the Spanish government's statement, that a bilateral working group was formed following Sanchez's visit, convening twice to "enhance cooperation between the two parties."

Recent months have seen converging reports suggesting significant progress in negotiations regarding the potential transfer of airspace management between the two countries. In February, the Spanish news outlet OkDiario reported discreet negotiations undertaken by a Spanish-Moroccan working group, tasked with addressing the future of the Sahara airspace.

Historically, the airspace in the region has been under Spanish control, with Morocco's airport authority ONDA coordinating movements with its European counterpart ENAIRE, despite Spain retaining overall airspace control.

As relations between Rabat and Madrid continue to improve, the airspace agreement has emerged as a focal point of discussions, with both nations emphasizing the importance of further strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Sanchez praised the "excellent" cooperation between the two countries, particularly in combating terrorism, illegal immigration, and human trafficking networks.

With a refined flair and a formal tone suitable for online publication, this article sheds light on the ongoing efforts by Spain and Morocco to enhance their collaboration in the strategically vital domain of airspace management, highlighting the nations' commitment to strengthening ties and fostering greater regional cooperation.
