US expands military presence in Middle East with up to 10,000 additional troops
The United States is preparing to reinforce its military presence in the Middle East with between 9,000 and 10,000 additional personnel, according to US officials cited by The Wall Street Journal. The deployment comes as tensions with Iran remain high and Washington considers its next steps following stalled diplomatic efforts.
The buildup includes the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group. The Theodore Roosevelt departed San Diego on Sunday, while the Makin Island group, made up of three amphibious ships carrying Marines from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, left the following day. The forces are expected to reach the region by late November.
The deployment could bring three US aircraft carriers into the region at the same time. The USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington are already operating in the Middle East, alongside the USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group. The arrival of the Roosevelt would therefore represent a substantial concentration of US naval power in the region.
The additional personnel include sailors, Marines and other military support elements, while the carrier groups bring fighter aircraft and other capabilities. Recent reports indicate that the broader US buildup could eventually place nearly 20,000 personnel in the region, depending on which forces remain deployed and the timing of rotations.
The move follows a period of heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran. According to recent reports, US officials are preparing for different scenarios as diplomatic efforts have failed to produce a lasting settlement. President Donald Trump has also discussed the possibility of renewed military action against Iran after the November midterm elections.
The deployment is also being closely watched by energy markets. News of the additional US forces contributed to a sharp rise in oil prices on October 1, with Brent crude settling above $102 a barrel as investors assessed the potential impact of renewed regional instability on energy supplies and shipping.
The scale of the planned reinforcement highlights the strategic importance Washington continues to attach to its military presence in the Middle East. The movement of additional ships, aircraft and personnel gives US commanders greater operational capacity in the region while diplomatic efforts surrounding Iran remain uncertain.
