Standard Chartered opens representative office in Morocco to enhance regional presence

British bank Standard Chartered has officially inaugurated a new representative office in Casablanca, Morocco, marking a significant expansion of its operations in the Middle East and North Africa region. This strategic move comes on the heels of receiving a license from Bank Al-Maghrib and the prestigious Casablanca Finance City (CFC) status from the Casablanca Finance City Authority.

The office will be spearheaded by Cynthia El Asmar, who has been appointed as the CEO and Head of Coverage for Morocco, pending regulatory approval. El Asmar brings a wealth of experience in client relations across the region and is tasked with leading the bank’s local strategy while fostering strong relationships with clients in Morocco.

This expansion is emblematic of Standard Chartered's long-term commitment to supporting clients in rapidly growing and globally interconnected markets. The bank recognizes Morocco’s robust economy and strategic position as pivotal factors that enhance its role in international trade and investment.

Rola Abu Manneh, CEO for UAE, Middle East, and Pakistan, emphasized the bank's unique position to assist Morocco's ambitious growth agenda, leveraging its extensive global network, sector expertise, and financing capabilities.

Cynthia El Asmar remarked on Morocco's significance as a bridge between Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa, noting that ongoing structural reforms are enhancing the country's ability to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) and improve its overall competitiveness. She believes Morocco is well-positioned to benefit from shifts in global trade flows and supply chains.

This latest development follows Standard Chartered’s recent establishment of full banking services in Egypt in early 2024 and in Saudi Arabia in 2021. The new office is poised to strengthen the bank’s connections with international enterprises, particularly in key sectors such as agriculture, automotive, aerospace, and renewable energy.

Having collaborated closely with Morocco’s banking sector for over a decade, Standard Chartered aims to deepen these partnerships through its new representative office, providing tailored banking services to both regional and international clients.

Headquartered in London, Standard Chartered is a prominent multinational banking and financial services company with a presence in over 50 countries, primarily across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
