Spain’s opposition seeks to block residency pathways for undocumented migrants

Spain’s center-right People’s Party has announced a major shift in its immigration policy ahead of the upcoming elections, proposing measures designed to make it nearly impossible for overstayers and undocumented migrants to gain legal residency. The plan represents a sharp departure from Spain’s history of periodic regularizations.

Under current law, valid until mid-2025, many undocumented migrants can regularize their status through programs like Arraigo, which allow residency for those demonstrating continuous residence, family connections, or employment ties. The opposition’s new strategy would remove or tighten these pathways, severely restricting opportunities for overstayers or migrants who entered the country without legal documentation.

The People’s Party frames the initiative as part of a broader reform of Spain’s immigration system, aiming to address public concerns about irregular migration, integration, and the perceived pressure on public services. The party argues that the approach would strengthen legal pathways while deterring unauthorized arrivals.

Though not yet codified into law, the proposal signals a firm policy stance likely to dominate election debates. Migrant advocacy organizations and legal experts caution that such measures could marginalize vulnerable communities and complicate efforts to integrate newcomers. The coming months will test Spain’s immigration policies and the wider European approach to migration in the run-up to the national elections.
