Russian missile strike kills toddler and mother in Kharkiv

A Russian missile attack slammed into central Kharkiv, killing at least two people a three-year-old boy and a woman believed to be his mother—and injuring 28 others on Friday. The strike demolished a five-story residential building in the city's Kyivskyi district, while also damaging nearby civilian infrastructure, including a shopping center and several vehicles. Rescue teams pulled the child's body from the rubble first, followed by the woman's, with a six-month-old infant among the wounded and 16 people requiring hospital treatment.

President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the assault as "outrageous," accusing Russia of persistent civilian targeting despite global diplomatic pushes, particularly from the United States. Preliminary reports point to two missiles hitting the residential area. Russia's Defense Ministry rejected involvement, claiming the blast stemmed from exploding Ukrainian munitions at the adjacent shopping center and alleging Kyiv staged the event to shift focus from a separate Ukrainian drone strike on New Year's Eve in Russian-occupied Kherson.

That Kherson attack, which hit a hotel and cafe in the village of Khorly, claimed at least 27 lives, including two children, according to Russian-installed authorities. Moscow blamed Ukraine for deliberately targeting New Year's revelers, but Ukraine's General Staff spokesperson insisted strikes focus solely on military objectives.

The incidents unfolded as Ukrainian and allied national security advisors gathered Saturday in Ukraine to advance peace proposals aimed at ending the nearly four-year war, with U.S. officials joining virtually. This comes ahead of a January 6 European leaders' summit in France to hash out security guarantees for Kyiv.

In parallel developments, Zelensky announced a major government reshuffle Friday, appointing 39-year-old military intelligence chief General Kyrylo Budanov as his new chief of staff, replacing Andriy Yermak, who resigned amid a corruption probe last November. Kharkiv, just 30 kilometers from the Russian border, has endured repeated Russian assaults throughout the conflict. The Institute for the Study of War notes Russian forces seized over 5,600 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in 2025 nearly 1 percent of the country's landmass, exceeding gains from the prior two years combined.
