Who is Nicolas Maduro? a profile of Venezuela’s controversial leader
Nicolas Maduro has been the president of Venezuela since 2013, following the death of Hugo Chavez. A former bus driver and union organizer, Maduro rose through the ranks of Venezuela’s leftist political movement and became a close ally of Chavez. He served as foreign minister and later as vice president under Chavez’s administration.
Since becoming president, Maduro has positioned himself as a defender of Venezuela’s socialist policies and a vocal critic of the United States, frequently accusing Washington of attempting coups, imposing sanctions, and undermining his government.
Critics, including opposition figures and Western governments, have accused Maduro of authoritarianism, election manipulation, and weakening democratic institutions, allegations that he denies. His 2024 re-election was widely unrecognized internationally, including by the United States.
