Wastewater discharge scandal near Nice leads to major upgrades at treatment plant
Major renovation works have recently been carried out at a wastewater treatment plant near Nice following serious concerns over repeated pollution incidents along the Mediterranean coast. The facility, located in the town of Saint-Laurent-du-Var, has been at the center of controversy after years of unexplained water quality degradation that led to frequent swimming bans.
The issue came to public attention after local authorities and the former operator exchanged accusations of mismanagement. Investigations suggested that long-standing technical failures and insufficient maintenance may have caused untreated wastewater to be released into the sea on several occasions, affecting coastal ecosystems and public health.
In response, extensive repair and maintenance operations were conducted in recent weeks. These works focused on restoring electrical systems, improving internal pumping mechanisms, cleaning aeration tanks, and clearing water channels leading into the plant. According to officials overseeing public water management, the condition of the infrastructure was found to be severely neglected.
Management of the facility has since been transferred to a new operator, tasked with stabilizing operations and ensuring compliance with environmental standards. Authorities report that, despite temporary service interruptions during the works, the plant is now functioning under improved conditions, with seawater quality returning to acceptable levels.
In the longer term, the treatment plant is expected to be decommissioned as surrounding municipalities are gradually connected to a larger, modern wastewater facility currently under construction in Nice. Meanwhile, a judicial investigation remains ongoing to determine responsibilities related to the pollution incidents, though no official conclusions have yet been made public.
